As I sat listening to Amanda Cook’s solo debut album, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed with a multitude of different emotions-hope, fear, peace, joy, gentleness, victory, courage, vulnerability. Each of the 13 beautiful songs on this album speaks such prophetic messages through the words and emotions. There is a story behind every track; Amanda, in her bravery, is completely honest and vulnerable with the listener, and her strong faith is strongly displayed in her album.
When asked what the album means to her, Amanda wrote these words:
This album represents a voyage - a voyage of discovering that God has been on our side all along and that he has given us permission to wrestle with truth, process pain, and ask big questions. This album is a reminder that along our pilgrimage there is invitation to be transformed by perfect Love.
Amanda's testimony, displayed in these songs, is a powerful story of God's perfect faithfulness, and His promise to genuinely love us, without expecting much in return. Her son "Mercy" beautifully describes how God shined His light through such a dark and painful time in Amanda's life.
This theme of redemption and God’s faithfulness is seen in every single one of these songs, including “Never See the End.”
The journey that Amanda ventures through begins with emotions and feelings of fear and disappointment, but ends with the confidence that God is faithful and walks, no, runs to us in our moments of need. God is continuously foolish for us, like the father was for the prodigal son. No longer are we searching for a love that would do anything to show it-God allowed Himself to be publicly humiliated and viewed as the most foolish man in the world, and still He was relentless about loving us. He doesn’t care what the social norm is, He just loves. With reckless abandon, never ceasing. “Brave New World” portrays this message clearly and confidently.
As I listened to the songs, thoughts of God’s faithfulness in my life swarmed around in my head. When I gave up on loving Him and following Him, God chased after me all the more. When I wept in my room because the circumstances I faced were overwhelming, He whispered to me and said, “I know you. I can personally relate to you. Let Me rock you in My arms. Let me be your comfort.” Amanda Cook has faced some really scary and dark moments in her life, as portrayed in some of hr songs, but her focus never adjusts to bring glory to herself, but rather to the God who, through it all, still showed mercy and grace, was still faithful even when Amanda wanted to give up.
